HMG (Human Menopausal Gonadotropin)

Overview

Human menopausal gonadotropin (HMG), also known as menotropin, is a gonadotropin preparation purified from the urine of postmenopausal women that contains both follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) activity. It has been used in reproductive medicine for decades to stimulate ovarian follicle development and, in men, to support spermatogenesis in hypogonadotropic hypogonadism. Pharmaceutical HMG is typically presented in vials standardized to 75 IU of FSH activity with 75 IU of LH activity.

Mechanism

HMG provides exogenous gonadotropins that act directly on the gonads, bypassing pituitary control. FSH drives ovarian follicle growth and, in men, supports Sertoli-cell function and early spermatogenesis, while LH (or the LH-like activity in HMG) stimulates steroidogenesis, which in men is completed by co-administered hCG.

Dosing

Clinical regimens are indication-specific and defined by fertility protocols and product labeling, with daily intramuscular or subcutaneous injections during controlled ovarian stimulation.
