Overview
Thymosin alpha-1 is a 28-amino-acid peptide originally isolated from thymus tissue and now produced synthetically. It is an immunomodulatory peptide that has been studied and, in some countries, approved (as Zadaxin) as an adjunct in conditions such as chronic hepatitis B and C. It has also been investigated in cancer immunotherapy, sepsis, and infectious disease.
Mechanism
Thymosin alpha-1 is not a classic hormone; it acts as an immune modulator that enhances T-cell maturation and function, stimulates dendritic cells and natural killer activity, and shifts cytokine profiles toward cellular immunity. These effects are mediated in part through Toll-like receptor signaling on innate immune cells.
Dosing
Clinical protocols have typically used subcutaneous injection several times per week over weeks to months. Research use follows protocol-specific regimens, and there is no single standard dose across settings.
