Overview

Noopept (also known as GVS-111) is a synthetic dipeptide-based nootropic, chemically N-phenylacetyl-L-prolylglycine ethyl ester, developed in Russia in the 1990s. It is derived from the structure of the endogenous peptide cycloprolylglycine and is described in its originating literature as enhancing memory and having neuroprotective properties. Most published mechanistic work comes from animal models, and it is used clinically in some post-Soviet countries, but large peer-reviewed human trials in the international literature are lacking.

Mechanism

The proposed mechanisms are not fully established. Animal studies report effects consistent with modulation of glutamatergic and cholinergic systems, increases in brain-derived neurotrophic factor or NGF-related signaling, and antioxidant-type actions. It is orally bioavailable and crosses the blood-brain barrier, and its acid metabolite is also reported to be active.

Dosing

In the originating clinical practice and animal literature, noopept is given orally, typically in milligram-range doses (single-digit to low tens of milligrams) per day; rodent studies use protocol-specific doses. Figures should be sourced from the primary literature, and products from unregulated suppliers carry quality risks.
