Overview
Argireline is the trade name of a synthetic acetyl hexapeptide (acetyl hexapeptide-8; earlier literature also cites it as acetyl hexapeptide-3), introduced by the ingredient company Lipotec for use in topical cosmetics. It is marketed as an anti-wrinkle ingredient on the premise that it can soften expression-related facial lines.
It is one of the most widely used peptide cosmetic ingredients and appears in many peptide skincare products. It is not a systemic research peptide, is not intended for injection, and its effects are limited to the topical cosmetic setting.
Mechanism
The peptide's sequence resembles a portion of the SNARE protein SNAP-25. It is proposed to compete with SNAP-25 during SNARE-complex assembly at the neuromuscular junction, reducing local neurotransmitter release and thereby modestly softening the muscle contractions behind expression wrinkles.
Supporting evidence comes largely from in vitro studies of neurotransmitter release and from small, mostly manufacturer-affiliated cosmetic trials. Concentrations used topically are far below those needed for any botulinum-toxin-like effect.
Dosing
Argireline is a cosmetic raw material rather than a dosed pharmaceutical. Finished products typically contain the peptide at low concentrations in topical formulations applied once or twice daily; exact percentages follow each manufacturer's formulation guidance.
