Overview

Human growth hormone (hGH) is a 191-amino-acid protein hormone secreted by the anterior pituitary. Recombinant hGH (somatropin) is an approved pharmaceutical used to treat growth hormone deficiency in children and adults and several other approved conditions. It is not a small research peptide, but it is included in peptide catalogs because of widespread interest in the GH-IGF-1 axis. Use outside approved indications, including age-related decline in GH secretion, is not approved and is poorly supported by outcome data.

Mechanism

hGH binds the growth hormone receptor, triggering release of insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) largely from the liver, and exerts direct metabolic effects on fat, muscle, and bone tissue. It promotes linear growth before epiphyseal closure and regulates body composition, favoring lean mass and lipolysis throughout life.

Dosing

Approved dosing is indication-specific and individualized, typically given as daily subcutaneous injections at microgram-per-kilogram doses defined in prescribing information. Research and off-label protocols should not be copied from vendor listings; dosing decisions belong to licensed clinical practice.
