Overview
Serrapeptase (serratiopeptidase) is a proteolytic enzyme isolated from the bacterium Serratia marcescens. It is an enzyme, not a peptide, and is sold as a systemic enzyme supplement with marketing claims of anti-inflammatory, fibrinolytic, and mucolytic activity. Clinical evidence is mixed and generally of low quality.
Mechanism
As a serine protease, serrapeptase cleaves peptide bonds in proteins. Proposed mechanisms include degradation of inflammatory mediators, reduction of edema, and thinning of mucus secretions. Oral bioavailability of an enzyme of this size is limited and debated, with enteric coating commonly used to protect it from gastric digestion.

Side Effects & Tolerability
