Snap-8 (acetyl octapeptide-3) is a synthetic cosmetic peptide marketed as a topical anti-wrinkle ingredient. It is designed to mimic an N-terminal region of SNAP-25, a protein involved in neurotransmitter release, with the goal of reducing contraction-driven expression lines. It is a cosmetic ingredient rather than a systemically acting drug.

Mechanism

By competing with SNAP-25 in the SNARE complex, the peptide is proposed to partially inhibit vesicle fusion and acetylcholine release at the neuromuscular junction, producing a botulinum-toxin-like softening of muscle contraction. Direct proof of this mechanism in intact skin is limited, and independent mechanistic studies are sparse.
