Survodutide
An investigational dual glucagon and GLP-1 receptor agonist with reported phase 2 weight-loss and MASH data; not approved.
Overview
Survodutide (BI 456906) is an investigational dual agonist of the glucagon and GLP-1 receptors, developed by Boehringer Ingelheim for obesity and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH). Publicly reported phase 2 results describe weight loss and improvements in liver-histology endpoints. It is not an approved drug.
Mechanism
The dual-agonist design combines GLP-1-mediated appetite suppression and glycemic benefit with glucagon-receptor-driven increases in energy expenditure and effects on hepatic lipid metabolism, aiming to reduce body weight and liver fat simultaneously.
Expected Effects
- Dose-dependent weight loss in the reported phase 2 obesity program
- Higher rates of MASH resolution and fibrosis improvement versus placebo in reported phase 2 histology data
- Glycemic improvements in participants with type 2 diabetes
Side Effects & Tolerability
As with the incretin class, gastrointestinal events such as nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea are the most common adverse effects and drive dose-titration strategies. Cardiovascular and long-term safety data await larger trials.
Storage
As an investigational research peptide, store lyophilized material cold and desiccated, protected from light and moisture, and follow the supplier certificate of analysis.
